Painting the Figure in Alla Prima
Instructed by Sean Oswald
Schedule
Mondays, 6-9pm
June 6 – July 11*
*There will be no class on July 4th in observation of Independence Day.
Description
Capturing the figure believably in oil paint can be a difficult task. Doing it in one sitting may seem almost impossible. Yet this is exactly what we will be doing in this workshop. Over the span of five weeks we will grapple with the full nude figure in oil paint learning and practicing accurate color mixing, drawing, and placement. We will learn how to acutely perceive and paint the lighting, values, and forms of the model to help develop your ability to paint “alla prima.”
Learning to paint directly or alla prima (wet into wet) is an excellent way to begin painting or to improve one’s painting ability, or even to discover new methods of painting. Alla prima is a challenging method that encourages a high level of accuracy, directness, and a confidence in decision making, especially in regards to color choices. When a student embarks on this process of direct painting, it can be an incredibly energetic, highly focused, and meditative experience. Learning to do the alla prima method well, and practicing it often, can greatly improve one’s discernment in painting. Utlimately its philosophy is transferable to other types of art making.

About the Instructor
Sean Oswald is an artist living and working in Cincinnati Ohio who focuses primarily on painting and drawing. Before attending graduate school Sean apprenticed with an artist who taught him the tradition of “alla prima” painting in upstate New York. While the skills he learned from the apprenticeship continue to undergird Sean’s work, he now applies the language of painting to paint through personal and contemporary concerns. Sean’s recent work explores the interconnections between the ideological frameworks of contemporary arts and Christian communities through narrative paintings and drawings that blur the line between sincerity and satire.
Sean holds a BA in Art Education from Miami University, an apprenticeship from the Carriage House Art Studio with the artist Garin Baker, and an MFA from the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP – College of Design, Architecture, Art & Planning.
