Description:
This workshop will introduce methods for achieving detail, expressiveness, and expansive tonal range through drawing. Each day will start with a brief presentation, followed by a demonstration of tools and techniques. Students will spend the rest of the day drawing from a live model guided by Hayakawa. The students will focus on the charcoal medium on Day 1, the graphite medium on Day 2, and then on Day 3, based on what they have learned during the previous sessions, students will explore their own unique, expressive potential by combining charcoal and graphite as well as other drawing mediums of their choice.
This class will cover the following topics:
• How to light a model in order to produce more visually striking outcomes
• How to push the expressive gestural quality of charcoal
• How to expand the detail and tonal range of graphite to its fullest potential
• How to combine charcoal and graphite (and other drawing mediums of the student’s choice) and take advantage of the characteristics of each to produce a successful result.
