Description:

Whenever we pour over our family photos, it’s natural to consider ideas of memory and love. If we give it just a little bit more thought, these pictures can even become opportunities to identify, understand, and—perhaps—empathize with so much more than the depicted subjects. Photographs of our nearest and dearest, of our history, can easily lead us to consider consequential issues including time, space, and class—even when the person behind the camera had no such motives.

Now, just imagine what a family photo might communicate to relatives when the photographer actually makes provisions of these potentials!

This virtual course will explore the formal relationships in your photos, your connections to your equipment (cameras and smartphones), the conceptual notions of family dynamics and resemblance, and the family photograph’s role in fine art photography.

Over the 8 weeks of this course, we’ll investigate:

  • The difference the family as fine art vs the family as “stock imagery”
  • Familiarity with your equipment (manual controls/settings, apps, and editing tools)
  • Important questions that can guide artistic decisions in non-artistic situations
  • The vital role of light and shadow in creating tone in your photography
  • Adobe Lightroom &/or the Darkroom
  • Critique strategies that even your mom who’s never been impressed by your interest in art will understand
