statement

My name is Laura Fisher and I live inside my head.

I like eating uncooked pasta and watching the news on mute. I'm obsessed with light bulbs and old photographs and hair and the concepts of memory and decay.

I suppose this is my biography. But I don't really know what to put in it. How does one write the story of her own life?

I don't like to talk about myself. Anything I could say in here would just describe my standing in society and in the art world, not my thoughts. I'm a sophomore at DAAP. My major is photography but I don't like working with it in a very traditional way. I also love metalworking and drawing (namely with soft, compressed charcoal or graphite). I've displayed my work at a wide variety of galleries in the past few years (a remarkable fact for someone my age).

I believe in my own imagination and my own ability to create beauty through art. I use drawing frequently to sketch out concepts for pieces before I launch into action. Sometimes, however, I choose to work on longer drawings. In 2007, I made drawings of animals sleeping and then coated them in beeswax. This past year I made a series of self-portraits involving my relationship with my hair and how I can use it to speak what I'm feeling. "Wedlock" is one of these self-portraits.

I'm a person who's always bursting with ideas; I simply wait for the right time to use them.
