statement

I would be false if I said that I had a definitive vision to communicate. I use drawing the way one might use a shovel to turn over the earth--I draw to burrow under the surface of things. I use what I know about rendering portraits in order to learn more about them. At this moment, the line between power and vulnerablity and between abuse of power and victimization is a fluid one for me. The same is true of self and other. I observe one stance, one orientation, and immediately see its underside. Lately I have observed a new and more physical effect of power on and in the body itself, often disfiguring, never static, always human. I use collage and water color. Collage allows me to work with existing surfaces as I create my own. Both collage and water color express a mutability that suggests transience and change.
