statement
In this piece, figures are covered in animal-like textures, which drape over them like a shroud.  I am interested in the patterns these textures create. Each feather is similar, but there are also subtle variations. People associate certain ideas and traits with certain animals, and I seek to play off of these pre-conceived notions. Transformed by the pattern, the figures become something else. Obscured by the pattern, they lose their individuality and start morphing together.  The colors are muted, and the unsmiling faces of the people create a sombre atmosphere. The figures are isolated in an empty space separating them from time and place. I use old photographs as source materials for the figures. I love the photographs themselves, but the people seem stuck in them. In these pieces, I can transform them, bringing them new life.
