Grisaille painting by Nicholas Raynolds

Figure Painting in Grisaille: Transitioning from Drawing
to Painting

Instructed by Visiting Artist Nicholas Raynolds

[ REGISTER HERE ]

Schedule

August 4-8
10am – 5pm with a one-hour break for lunch

Registration Deadline: July 31

Description

Grisailles, or monochromatic painting, is a fundamental step in learning to paint in a naturalistic way and offers a logical transition from drawing to oil painting. Grisaille simplifies the challenging art of objective figure painting by allowing us to thoroughly examine form revealed by value, as distinct from color. Though not necessarily black and white, the Grisaille is an important study as a precursor to working in color.

Working from casts and models, participants will create small, single-sitting poster studies during morning sessions and a larger, fully rendered piece in the afternoon. These two complementary working methods will serve as the vehicle to explore issues concerning Grisaille Painting. Instructor demonstrations and individual critiques will compliment topics of discussion including composition, the anatomy of light and shadow, paint handling and materials.
