Schedule

Five Sundays 10am–1pm
August 10th – September 7th

“With watercolour, you can't cover up the marks. There's the story of the construction of the picture, and then the picture might tell another story as well.”   – David Hockney

Description

Watercolor painting is too often overlooked or dismissed as a medium for preliminary sketches and Sunday painters. It is in fact a singular medium exhibiting both the directness of drawing and encompassing the color theory and mark making of painting. Ultimately the delicate balance of pigment and water, and their reactions on paper, are completely unique. While working in watercolor, artists hone their abilities, patience, and discipline all while navigating the chance reactions of the medium.

This course will be an exploration of watercolor painting as a mode of translating the environment in full, including color, texture, atmosphere, and mood. Subject matter will include still life and the figure in interior. Topics and discussion will include mixing and applying color, analyzing color in the physical environment, processes and materials, and watercolor artists including John Singer Sargent, Andrew Wyeth, and Charles Reid.
