Session I:  August 11th – September 15th*
(Color theory through still life painting)

Session II:  September 29th – October 27th
(The human figure - isolated figure/portraiture)

Session III:  November 10th – December 8th
(Human figure in space - interior/exterior)

*The class will not meet on September 1st (Labor Day)

Description

In this class students will aim to convincingly translate our three-dimensional world into flat imagery using oil paint. We will be working solely from direct observation (“from life”), learning how to visually understand, analyze, and interpret our surroundings via formal concepts like shape, value, and color.

The class will focus on the traditional subjects of still life and the human figure. Students will develop basic color mixing skills, a core painting vocabulary (through regular informal critique, group and individual), and an expanded awareness of historical and contemporary artists.

We will become familiar with a range of painting approaches and will apply them toward the successful composition, development, and completion of a painting.

The subject of each session will vary according to this schedule:

Session I: color theory through still life painting
Session II: the human figure (isolated figure/portraiture)
Session III: human figure in space (interior/exterior)

Cost

Any one 5-week session: $160
Any two 5-week sessions: $300
All three sessions (15 weeks): $430

About the Instructor

Christina Weaver grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and attended the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. In 2014 she earned her Masters Degree in Painting at Indiana University Bloomington, where she taught undergraduate painting and drawing.

At the Academy in Philadelphia, Weaver received an atelier-style art training and gained experience in traditional painting and drawing techniques. She paints primarily with oils and works from observation and abstractly within the broad boundaries of contemporary still life.

Christina Weaver’s work has been featured in galleries and at various group and solo exhibitions in New York, Philadelphia, Santa Fe, Indiana, and Alabama. She has received many awards including the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant for contemporary artists who work traditionally, and in 2012 she was featured in the Southwest Art Magazine as one of the “21 under 31: Young Artists to Collect”. Weaver currently lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she is an artist-in-residence at Manifest. Her works are part of private collections in the United States and abroad.
