Description
In this class students will aim to convincingly translate our three-dimensional world into flat imagery using oil paint. We will be working solely from direct observation (“from life”), learning how to visually understand, analyze, and interpret our surroundings via formal concepts like shape, value, and color.
The class will focus on the traditional subjects of still life and the human figure. Students will develop basic color mixing skills, a core painting vocabulary (through regular informal critique, group and individual), and an expanded awareness of historical and contemporary artists.
We will become familiar with a range of painting approaches and will apply them toward the successful composition, development, and completion of a painting.
The subject of each session will vary according to this schedule:
Session I: color theory through still life painting
Session II: the human figure (isolated figure/portraiture)
Session III: human figure in space (interior/exterior)
Cost
Any one 5-week session: $160
Any two 5-week sessions: $300
