ELEMENTS OF COLOR

Elements of Color is a 3-course series exploring the application of color theories. Develop a working color vocabulary while building skills in color-based mediums such as paint and chalk pastel. Strengthen your use of color by understanding how it influences perception, emotion, and meaning in your visual practice.

These courses are not sequential, and therefore can be taken individually or
as a 15-week intensive series.

THE INTERACTION OF COLOR BEGINNING PAINTING: COLOR THE FIGURE IN COLOR

Color is relative. All color use in art – from Michelangelo’s frescoes to James Turrell’s skyspaces – stems from this simple yet fundamental truth. In order to use color intelligently, we must first learn to see color in all its marvelous complexity. Using cut paper, we will begin to understand color by practicing a series of experiments designed by the 20th century master Josef Albers.

Color mixing is simultaneously the most challenging and rewarding part of a painter’s practice. Becoming familiar with one’s materials and learning to mix accurate color is an invaluable step in every artist’s education. Using acrylic paint, we will explore the color wheel, various harmonies, and color systems. In this class we will develop our visual vocabulary and train our eyes to understand what we see. Through a series of technical exercises combined with observational painting studies, we will practice mixing and thoughtfully applying colors to create both realistic and expressive images.

Figure drawing is the foundation of a solid art practice. This course is an introduction to drawing the figure in color. We will use chalk pastels to create both realistic and expressive skin tones. Working from a nude model, we will spend five weeks in an extended study of the human figure, its proportions, and its potential for individual creative expression.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Samantha Haring is a Midwest painter from Des Plaines, Illinois. She makes quiet paintings that discuss the nature of loss and the inherent duality of absence and presence. Haring earned her MFA from Northern Illinois University (2014) and her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2011). She has also studied in Italy at the International School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture; it was there that she fully developed her commitment to light, color, and observational painting. Haring received a scholarship from the Union League Club in Chicago in 2013. Her paintings have been exhibited across the country, recently in the “Art of Painting” show juried by William Bailey. Haring’s work is published in the Manifest International Painting Annual 4; her work is also featured in issue #119 of New American Paintings. She is one of the 2015–2016 Manifest Artists in Residence, and has also served as adjunct instructor at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
