Description: The goal of this course is to explore and rediscover the inventiveness and creativity that analog photography should offer. By stepping away from the complete sense of control we can experience with digital photography for the mystery and reward in experimenting with inexpensive toy cameras*, students will develop a meaningful understanding of their tools and capacity to create with the unexpected.

In this 8-week course, students will learn how to:

  • Manipulate the mechanics and characteristics of toy and/or vintage cameras
  • Build your own camera
  • Develop film, make prints, and problem solve toward an evolving personal vision

* Students will be able to check out one of the Drawing Center’s Diana Mini camera for the duration of the class.

Beginning materials List: (additional film sizes, paper types, and cameras* will be discussed in early course meetings):

  • 8 Rolls of Kodak Tri-X 35mm film or Ilford HP-5 Plus 35mm film (400 ISO/ 24 exposures)
  • 50 sheets (minimum)- 8”x10” resin coated, variable contrast photo paper

* A note about cameras: Everyone enrolled in the course will have immediate access to a Diana Mini camera for the duration of the class. Other types of “toy” cameras, including Holgas (which use a 120 format film), pinhole cameras, Brownies, and Polaroid (to name a few), will be discussed early on and may be welcomed depending on a particular week’s lessons.

Please contact Manifest Drawing Center coordinator, Adam Mysock at mysock@manifestdrawingcenter.org with any questions about the material list.

Level of Study: Participants must have a basic understanding of, and experience with, black and white film processing. It is suitable for novices with experience and for those wishing to recharge their darkroom skills with novel tools.
