THE PHOTO ESSENTIALS SERIES — A YEAR OF STUDY

“I feel it is the heart, not the eye, that should determine the content of the photograph. What the eye sees is its own. What the heart can perceive is a very different matter.” — Gordon Parks

INVESTIGATING THE PROCESSES AND TOOLS OF ANALOG PHOTOGRAPHY AND THE DARKROOM

The mechanics of film photography don’t have to be mysterious. Slow and careful looking, deliberate use of your equipment, patient comprehension, and fearless experimentation are the foundations of any emotive darkroom-oriented photo practice.

Whether you’re picking up a camera for the first time, or brushing up on your skills after a studio sabbatical, Photography Essentials is the perfect place to find your lens-based “voice”. This five-class series offers a foundation in basic darkroom practices and techniques, as well as ongoing conversations about picture-making meant to unify the eye and the heart in the service of meaningful visual communication.

You may sign up for any class within the series individually, as a “refresher” on a specific topic, or you can register for the entire series as a whole for a significant discount.

Follow the links above for descriptions of each course, and to register.

Instructors

Each section of Photography Essentials will have its own instructor, an expert in their topic. Introduction to Black and White Film Photography will be taught by Laura Lair. The Next Level Darkroom will be taught by Michael Wilson. Alternative Processes will be taught by Andy Houston. Instructors for the other sections will be announced as they are confirmed.

Fee (Individual 4-week classes): $190

Full Series Price: (all 5 courses): $725 (Save $45 per class!)

(Course fees includes black & white chemistry and FREE access to all Open Photography Labs during the duration of the course/series when appropriate.)

Course Schedule: varies by class

* Meeting times for the five sections may vary. See each course page for specific times. The website will be updated as soon as possible and full-series students will be notified immediately if necessary.

Minimum Enrollment: 3

Maximum Enrollment: 10

Level: All levels are welcome. Photography Essentials is geared towards beginners (even those who’ve never picked up a camera) and those wishing to brush up on their basic film photography skills. Each class will feature short demonstrations, specific lessons, and individual feedback for each student. Photography is a practice that has a far reach, and whether your artistic goals are for pleasure or profession, we believe that making art is one of the best ways to appreciate the world more deeply.
