Are you ready to embrace the idea that digital and film photography can be complimentary, not rivals? In this workshop, we’ll show you how to transform originally digital images into large-scale negatives and take you into the darkroom to bring the negatives to life as unprecedented gelatin-silver prints.
This class will cover the following topics:
- The techniques needed to create useful negatives from native-digital images (basic Photoshop steps, local printers, etc.)
- Complete darkroom printing processes, with a focus on contact prints from single and multiple negative(s)
- Creating a composition on paper with successful easel cropping
- Exploring advanced techniques like use of contrast filters (time permitting)
(This fee covers the printing of two negatives for each participant [from the participant’s own digital library… see the note under the materials list below], all necessary darkroom chemistry, and all photo paper.)
Minimum: 3 per date
Maximum: 6 per date
Manifest Drawing Center will provide all necessary materials. However, participants will need to send two high-resolution digital files (300 dpi) to the instructor (firstname.lastname@example.org) by November 6 for the November 11th workshop and November 10 for the November 17th workshop, so that the instructor has time to have those images printed in negative form and ready for darkroom experimentation prior to the start of the workshop.
Level of Study: No experience necessary. This workshop is OPEN TO ALL.
LOCATION: Unless otherwise specified, all courses are hosted at Manifest's Drawing Center Studios in Madisonville at 4905 Whetsel Avenue (second floor) (see map and direction links below). Manifest's studio facility provides two classrooms, a darkroom, and a processing room all totalling nearly 4000 square-feet. The
studios are outfitted with professional equipment, furniture, and study aids.
