Extending the Gesture is an expansion on Manifest’s popular Gesture Drawing Workshop in that it includes a 2nd session, one week later, where students will return to be guided in how to incorporate these principles into longer, more developed figure drawings, so that the completed works of art retain the responsive immediacy of a gesture approach.
Life drawing requires a practice that is active and dynamic to fully identify with the figure on its own terms. Prior to the slower, more measured Academic approach to figure drawing, master artists like Michelangelo and Rubens drew quickly and responsively, developing an immediate eye-to-hand relationship through gesture drawing. Too often emphasis is placed on the exterior of the figure as an envelope that holds light and three-dimensional form. As the basis for drawing, line should be a life force that moves through the body, inside and out, elucidating rhythm and energy. In this intensive class we will draw from the model rapidly in an attempt to connect ourselves intuitively to the human form. Various exercises will be implemented to encourage this practice including master copies, analysis of historical precedent and multiple shorter and longer drawings from the figure.
After completing this two-part workshop, participants should anticipate a clearer grasp of how gesture drawing not only activates the initial steps of a figure drawing, but threads it’s way through the entire process.
