Throughout the history of western art, portraiture has been a popular artistic practice. For most people, their earliest drawings as children are of a human face. Portraits operate with many functions, not the least of which are as mirrors of ourselves. Even a portrait of a stranger can have the magnetic ability to pull us into its gaze and lead us to consider the greater connections with humanity. Therefore Manifest feels it appropriate to offer this subject-based course to help instruct and inspire people in this age-old practice that remains relevant today.
ABOUT FACE: Approaches to Portraiture is a formal ten-week course that provides instruction in various approaches to portraiture. The class begins with a number of quicker sketches from plaster casts and/or anatomical models for the first few sessions with an emphasis on achieving accuracy of form and proportion. The remaining majority of sessions will be divided into two poses from a live model with a focus on capturing the fundamental beauty of the portrait, the perception and expression of character.
The course is structured to serve a wide range of skill-sets on an individual basis. In-depth demonstrations and individual tutoring will help guide each student according to his or her needs in drawing portraits.
Students are allowed to use different media, but it is recommended that every student stays consistent in their medium of choice for the entire course. A complete list of materials will be provided one-week prior to the start of the course.
