statement

I am, primarily, a realist figurative artist who draws on her own life experiences for subject matter.  My drawings, then, are very personal.  My intent, however, is to reach beyond my own process to touch upon a deeper understanding that is at the heart of our shared humanity.  The drawings of my dying mother speak most clearly to this.  Watching her physical transformation over several weeks was painful and somewhat horrific.  I think that is evident in my description of her features.  What I came to see over time, however, was a certain quiet, a calm and peacefulness that spoke, not of horror, but of grace.  The simplicity of the compositions, in values of black and white, conveys this.  I witnessed my mother's letting go of the physical realm and her opening to another dimension:  one of spirit and energy.  In this transformation, I understood that there is beauty.
