statement

My drawings are a hybrid of various human physiological systems, which I depict through rendering abstract networks of forms, shapes, lines, and marks. Like our internal anatomy, the structures in my works are layered, linear, flowing, clustered, open, dense, intertwined; interpreting gravity, fluids, gases, pressures and tensions. The drawings evolve intuitively as I use a continuous line to build up an image meant to reference both man-made structures and biomorphic configurations. I study medical illustrations and diagrams, industrial factories and building systems (such as heating/cooling systems and plumbing systems), and geological structures as research to develop the abstracted forms in my drawings.

The complex relationship between the manufactured and the natural has become increasing influential in my artwork and research.  In 2010, I closely followed the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico through the live video streaming of the oil spill. The physicality, viscosity and displacement of the oil and dispersant in contrast to the salt water were properties I found compelling to depict in recent work as it viscerally expresses the significance of this environmental disaster. The image of the pipeline seeping oil presented the earth as an organism to me, suffering from a faulty and altered system. My interests lie in capturing this shifting of scale from micro to macro and the complex relationship between exterior, man-made structures and interior, subsurface, biomorphic configurations.
