statement

The majority of my drawings are large-scale self-portrait drawings using pencil on paper. These drawings are meticulously-rendered, elaborately staged and illustrative works that use dramatic and expressive poses as well as visceral symbolism as a conduit for both personal and universal narratives.

The drawing "Leora especially loved wandering in the field rows on Sunday mornings" is uncharacteristic for my body of work in that it is not a self-portrait. This work originated from a small sketchbook drawing that I was compelled to make larger, as the imagery embodied a mystical quality that harkened back to my childhood in the South and my love of Southern Gothic narrative.

The drawing is embellished around the edges with a border of gold leaf and beading onto and into the surface of the paper. This border serves as a visual enclosure for the image, but also serves to transcend a simply illustrative drawing with a tangible, touchable, physical surface and the suggestion of the artist's handwork.
