statement

I am interested in the modes of gendered socialization (institutional regiments, clothing, storytelling, etc.) and how these are manifested through children's play and group interactions. The use of drawing on paper references these methods of childhood instruction, as the carefully penciled and colored illustrative style mimics the images that are so often absorbed by children through the white field of a book page.

"Wake" depicts a scene that is tinged with the sinister, as the young girls are scrutinized by both the gaze of the viewer and the semicircle of black-veiled women.  Mournful and elegant, the ever-vigilant figures in black have passed from girlhood into the realm of the adult woman, and in turn enforce the guidelines they themselves were raised with.  In contrast, the young girls are grouped as a lively and scattered collective, engaged in play that either reveals their gendered conditioning or resists the ladylike behavior that will soon be expected of them.
