statement

When I first moved to Utah, I swore it would never be my home.  It seemed far too barren and exposed, nothing like the closeness and damp green of my true home in Oregon.  I missed the ocean and the forest, the smell of the dirt after rain.  But day after day of living under these mountains, they have become a part of me.  Now when I visit Oregon--I no longer can call it my sole home--I find myself missing the massive presence of those same mountains.  I am interested in the role the landscape takes in our lives.  Often we talk about how man leaves his mark on the land, but I am interested in how the land reciprocates in this relationship, how it marks us, and especially how we perceive that subtle mark-making, and how those marks ultimately make us.  I find that drawing provides me with an outlet to explore my ideas while allowing the repetitive processes to lead my thoughts and refine my hand.  I see the mark of the pencil as connected to the conceptual mark of the land on myself.  My work is an attempt to understand that connection.
