statement

I have always been interested in how women adorn themselves. As a child I was fascinated watching my mother transform herself in the mornings and evenings through the use of makeup and hairpieces. I now use these feminine objects as a metaphor for personal expression. Using hair seemed like a natural subject. In this particular body of work, I intentionally limited my use of objects. Doing this allowed me the most room to explore the texture, pattern, line and mass of my chosen subject.

I spent many years studying traditional art methods. Now I am trying to  take that tradition  a step further. Each drawing is an attempt to limit myself: a piece of paper and some charcoal. I'm attempting to make the most from very little. Working on drawings this size is very physical. I extend my arms farther and farther apart with each mark. The  drawing itself begins to take over the process. The image dictates to me what it wants to look like.
