statement

This body of work is an investigation of line, movement and the inner recesses of my mind. The drawings emerge out of a conscience decision to relax and to let my inner voice bypass the muck of my ambition. I start each piece with a clear head and a random line; a release of visual nonsense that is more an act of destruction than creation. I continue layering on just enough line so as to push beyond the anxiety of ruining a perfectly clean sheet of paper. From this point, there is no turning back as each line leaves a stain on the paper that is not possible to remove. In this way, the drawing is already somewhat determined and my goal from this point forward is to make the best of what I have- to look for what I am meant to find among the lines that I have dealt. In the beginning, the possibilities seem unfamiliar and endless. Each small change is a bold act of moving forward and of narrowing my choices. As the drawing comes to a close it begins to take on a form that seems vaguely familiar- as if I always knew what it should look like and all I need to do is just polish it up a bit. The images that emerge from this mess are as much a formal play of overlapping lines, as they are churning knots of vines and organic matter. They are a dramatic and over-indulgent arrangement of forms: a pursuit of the sublime in nature. They are at once a meditation, an escape and a rumination. They are a search for something that has no resolution.
