statement

Rooted in observational drawing and painting, my work describes internal experiences of our contemporary world. I'm endlessly inspired by the fluid relationship between physical place and a person's mental landscape.

Father arose from what I perceived as a rare moment of peace for my dad, a busy surgeon, one afternoon on my parents' back porch in Florida. The way the sun engulfed him struck me as poignant. The orchid, one of many raised by my mother, became a significant element as the drawing progressed, both formally and as a symbol of her presence in my father's life.

Julia's written essays and reviews can be found in The Huffington Post and Title Magazine. She currently teaches at Delaware Art Museum (Wilmington, DE), Fleisher Art Memorial (Philadelphia, PA), and Rose Tree Media Academy (Media, PA). Since 2013, she helps develop drawing curriculum for medical students at Thomas Jefferson University's Sidney Kimmel Medical College (Philadelphia, PA).
