Katelyn Wolary was born and raised in the small town of Wilmington, OH, where she knew at an early age that she wanted to become an artist. She recieved her Bachelor’s of Fine Art in Illustration with a minor in Creative Writing from the Art Academy in the spring of 2017. Katelyn has received several scholarship awards, including three Helms Trust purchase awards with works belonging to the permanent collection of the Art Academy of Cincinnati. She has shown work in exhibitions at the Society of Illustrators in New York, the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center, and the 21C Museum Hotel in Cincinnati, as well as a solo show Looking Through in spring of 2017 at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.

Artist's Statement:

"My paintings and drawings explore the psychological, atmospheric complexity of quietude, solitude, and wonderment against the backdrop of the unyielding force and mystery of the world around us.  Through traditional materials such as oil paint or charcoal, I create representational imagery derived from observation, imagination, and photography. Most of my work is figurative, often portraying people my own age. My work is autobiographical in this way, as I do my best to make work about what I know, or what I am trying to understand. Rather than an overtly storied approach to this imagery, I find it exists in the everyday of our visual world, within the nuance of paying a particular type of attention. From a familiar source, I can appropriately expand on a subject and explore it meaningfully, by composing and re-interpreting reality in terms of a more poetic vision. Themes of how it feels to be a woman in my early twenties, beginning adulthood, leaving behind the security of home and adolescence, and navigating the balance between what I want for myself and what is expected of me are all themes I am interested in communicating through my work."
