statement

As an Artist and Photographer, I am concerned with capturing images of the world that I know, the world that I experience–both on the seen and unseen side of life.  And what do I know?  Drama. Tension.  Humor.  Contradiction.  Sensuality.  Tragedy.  Beauty.  Ambiguity.  Love.  And God.  All of my work has a common theme: Mystery.  The mystery of existence, the mystery of simply being, the mysterious energy of a person, or a place–that mystery which attracts us with it's hypnotic power, drawing us into the space between affirmation and doubt, forcing us to expand our perceptual boundaries within the realm of the new.  Transcendence.  I deal in Transcendence.  It's not comfortable, and it's not meant to be.  My images demand attention, focus, and release–release of the banal, or personal prejudice, to embrace the extraordinary.

I was born in Hollywood and work as a Production Designer in Film and Television.  I am also a Fine Art Photographer, and a Fine Art Painter.  I have been nominated six times for the Emmy Award in Art Direction, and won an Emmy for Disney's Cinderella, starring Whitney Houston and Brandy.  My latest projects are American Horror Story (Art Director: Seasons 1, 2) and I recently production designed the Lifetime Movie Return to Zero, with Minnie Driver and Alfred Molina.

My photographs have been published in Photographer's Forum Magazine's Annual Best Of Photography 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013, and my work has appeared in over forty international photography competitions, either as a place winner or finalist.  I've been shown in museums and galleries in Spain, California, Minnesota, Colorado, Vermont, and Oregon.  Recently, my image Hydrotherapy Room won First Place in the 6th AnnualPollux Awards–Architecture Category.  I am now working on my upcoming photo book My Vermont: An Outsider'sInside View.  It is a visual love letter to the people of Central Vermont, showing who they are and how they live.

In 2013 my painting, The Annunciation, won First Place in The Artist's Magazine All Media International Competition–Pastel Category.  I hold a Bachelor Degree in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Scenic Design from Carnegie-Mellon University.  I also attended the Academie de Port Royal in Paris, France, studying painting and drawing.  For fun, I am a Masters Swimmer, and I currently live in Los Angeles with my Life Partner of 25 years, the poet Sam Ambler.
