statement

The places portrayed in my paintings are silent studio settings and scenes inside my home. I am inspired to make these paintings by the light acting on everyday objects and the geometric relationships that lie therein. Paintings begin as extreme simplifications of my subject and then become increasingly focused as each layer and mark begins to accumulate toward the complexity of what is being observed.

My paintings are built through a variety of marks and are a combination of creamy, sheer, scraped, sprayed, broadly brushed and tightly interwoven areas of paint. Each action necessitates a reevaluation and revision of prior actions. In this way, as I work on my paintings, they are constantly in the state of becoming and seldom do I have a vision for a work that is in any way an accurate projection to the final outcome. Although decidedly empirical in nature much of my work in recent years has relied more heavily on constructing an image and conventions of perception regarding image making. Ultimately, I seek to find wholeness, poetry and joy in the struggle to solve a pictorial puzzle.
