Anticipation (2006)


Greg Sawtell's short digital and clay animation is the first juried selection in Manifest's Moving Pictures series of short films. Sawtell has a degree from the Rhode Island School of Design, and has had his short films included in festivals around the world.

Trona (2004)


Director David Fester lends his serene, stark aestheic to the story of a young businessman, who, disillusioned with his life and bored by his surroundings, mysteriously finds himself in the desert. After making his way back to civilization, and encountering a handful of local personalities, the man decides to abandon his former life and reinvent himself as the owner of a junkyard in a ghost town.

Alternately introspective, vulgar and comedic, Trona draws inspiration from the landscape and the people of the Mojave Desert. Junkyards, motel rooms, dilapidated structures and abandoned landscapes are all characters in their own right, playing opposite a quiet, mustached protagonist.

Best of RESFEST vol. 1 (2002)


Manifest Gallery continues the second season of its Art and Design on Film Series with selected short films by sixteen filmmakers and designers working in a broad variety of techniques. A compilation of hand-drawn animation, digital animation, and live action, the films represent the most outstanding shorts of the annual international RESFEST film festival, which, since 1997 has toured major cities from New York to Rome and Tokyo.

Cutting the Rug
(2006)



As a part of Whimsical Muse exhibition, Manifest presents a short narrative work by Charlie Kearns.

Appalachian artist, Charlie Kearns comes from Zanesville, Ohio. His work reflects skills gathered along the way to Hollywood and back. He has taught at OSU, USC, CSLB and OU. His writing and photography appear in The Los Angeles Times, Hollywood Reporter, The Village Voice and The Times Recorder. As a filmmaker, he has completed several documentaries. His whimsical mixed media “Hockney and the Half-Shell” is currently at the Ohio Art League Gallery in Columbus. His award winning coal mining play is in preproduction. And Kearns can be seen into perpetuity arresting the bad guys in “The Shawshank Redemption.

Sketches of Frank Gehry (2005)


As a complement to its exhibitions, The Whimsical Muse and Scott Robertson’s Drawthrough Collection (Dec. 22 - Jan. 19), Manifest Gallery will screen director Sidney Pollack’s Sketches of Frank Gehry. Filmed over a span of five years, the movie documents Gehry’s creative ideation process and addresses the aestheics of architectural form and functionality wihin the context of his work.

Frank Gehry (b. 1929) is one of the world’s leading contemporary architects, noted for his chracteristically organic designs and unconventional spacial compositions. His finished designs include the Guggenhein Museum, Bilbao, Spain; the Pritzker Pavalion in Chicago; the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles; and the Vontz Center for Molecular Studies in Cincinnati. Gehry has received the Gold Metal for Architecutre from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (awarded 2002) as well as the Gold Metal Award from the American Institute of Architects (awarded 1999).

A work by NYC video artist Sharon Mooney.

13W follows a day in the life of an eccentric, senior-citizen school bus driver/drummer as he offers his unique reflections upon the modern safety issues of driving a school bus in a suburban, southern city.

The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2005)


The second feature film from director Jeff Feuerzeig, and winner of the best Documentary Award at the San Francisco Independent Film Festival (2005) The Devil and Daniel Johnston is an intimate look into the life of its eponymous outsider artist and musician. Using interviews with his friends, family members, and critics, as well as excerpts from home videos and recordings, it examines the tumultuousness of Johnston’s career with a perspective of equal sentiment and pathos.

Daniel Johnston (b. 1961) continues to work in a variety of media and, within the last year, has showcased his art in the Whitney Biennial, London’s Aquarium Gallery, and New York’s Clementine Gallery.

Green Meadow (2006)


Jamaican artist Oneika Russell uses mixed-media drawings to illustrate a fantastic, haunting dreamscape of floating bodies and scintillating meadows.

Running Time 2 minutes

Born in 1980, Oneika Russell is a fine artist working in Kingston with digital and traditional media. Her work is generally made up of drawings, objects, digital animations and video.

The Guatemalan Handshake (2006)

Pieces of the mystery begin to come together as Turkeylegs sets out to find her missing friend. Cars drive circles in the dirt, a woman attends her own funeral, the sun rises sideways and an orange vehicle trades hands again and again. Everything eventually culminates in a massive demolition derby that throws all of the characters into different directions.

Todd Rohal- Writer/Director

Todd Rohal wrote and directed four short films before completing his first feature-length production of The Guatemalan Handshake. His short films, including Knuckleface Jones and Hillbilly Robot, screened at SXSW, NY Underground, Hamptons, Slamdance, Athens, Long Island and Maryland film festivals. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Todd graduated from the Honors Tutorial Department of Ohio University with a BFA in Film, where he met most of the cast and crew who contributed to the production of The Guatemalan Handshake.

Taken from video documentation of his four-hour performance, artist Jordan McKenzie’s film shows the physicality of the drawn mark as graphite and a white cube are used to determine and map gestures in space.

South African collective The Blackheart Gang tells the story of a colony of pirranah birds living on the back of a ruthless octopus. As the octopus continues to devour the birds, the colony faces extinction and, with the help of a mouse, plan an escape.

Multiply
(2006)

The five music videos that comprise Multiply are part of one work by The Dozens. The Dozens is an imaginary "band" of six visual artists: Denise Burge, Tracy Featherstone, Elaine Lynch, Letitia Quesenberry, Lisa Siders-Kinney, and Jenny Ustick. Each two-person 'band' wrote a song and created an animated music video.

The Country (2006)

Directed and Animated by Brady Baltezore

"The Country" is a short animated film based on a poem by former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins. San Francisco based Designer/ Director Brady Baltezore employed hand drawings, textiles, wood, and paper composited into 2 and 3D environments to bring the poem to life. The short was created to run as an interstitial on the Sundance Channel, and has been making the animated short festival circuit since March 2006.

California-based artist/animator Don Hertzfeldt has had a career in animation since 1995. His hand-drawn animations have been featured on MTV, Bravo, IFC, Cartoon Network, and The Sundance Channel. Additionally, Hertzfeldt’s films have received several awards and acknowledgements for outstanding animation, including the Short Film Palm D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for Billy’s Balloon (1998) and an Academy Award nomination in Animated Short Film for Rejected (2001).
